A HARD ROW TO HOE ALL BY YOSELF
Despite the undeniably central role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, the Biblical focus has largely been on what God has accomplished through the agency of men -from Adam to the Apostles. Of some 3,000 characters named in the Bible, fewer than 10 percent are women.
The Bible's Lost Stories
Barbara Kantrowitz and Anne Underwood, NEWSWEEK
it reminded me of what my language teacher back in sec school told me about the diffrence between islam and christianity. i remember we were still at winstead road that time and i was rocking my chair back and forth coz it was hot and i was dead bored with malay class coz he was marking some stuff and the rest of the fools i was in class with were playing majic cards. cikgu hated it when i rock my chair like that. it annoyed him no end. so he beckoned me to sit by him and he started talking to me while he was marking his form's class CME books (malay classes were the bomb! i usually did my a.maths homework in malay classes). and then he got to this topic. says he got into an argument with a colleague once back when he was a young teacher in MOE. says the colleague was trashing islam, saying the religion has no respect for women.
and cikgu said exactly what's mentioned above. he said unlike the quran, the bible barely touch upon women, in fact some of its followers actually call mary a whore to this day. that sure shut that lil smug fuck's mouth up, he said. i think i was gaping when he was telling me the story. gaping the whole way. salute!
and there were a coupla more things he talked to me about. some things i remember vividly, some things i can't recall at all. although i couldn't get a decent grade for my malay paper back in school, i think he taught me well enuff.
